Discontinuous precipitation (DP) is a commonly observed mechanism by which solid solutions decompose. It results from layers of precipitate and solute depleted matrix forming across moving boundary. The morphology the discontinuous regions can be highly complex, way dislocations or twins navigate such structure during deformation poorly understood. Only through 3-dimensional (3D) analysis true revealed. This work presents first 3D study DP using novel PFIB based serial sectioning method. material studied AZ80, an industrially important class Mg-Al-Zn alloy where observed. revealed to consist interconnected network within matrix. width show strong local variations. expected readily penetrated dislocations.
